Fields put together back-to-back productive seasons at Virginia (58 catches for 811 yards and five touchdowns in 2023, followed by 55 for 808 and five more in 2024) before a quieter final year at Notre Dame (36 receptions for 630 yards and five scores). His throughline across all three seasons was his big-play ability, reflected in a yards-per-catch progression of 14.0, 14.7, and 17.5. He topped 100 yards three times in 2024 (5/100, 11/148, and 9/129) and saved his best Notre Dame moments for late in the year with two strong outings (4/97 and 7/99/2).

His testing numbers (4.61 at the 2026 NFL Combine) confirm what the tape suggested. Fields isn't winning with speed. What Fields does offer is a 6'4", 220-pound frame that changes the math on contested catches. He's a jump-ball specialist with reliable hands, capable of converting difficult throws into completions that smaller receivers can't make.

He competes physically at all three levels and can create early wins in press coverage off the snap, but his lack of separation speed shrinks his operating space. His route tree has real limitations. Field’s most comfortable working downfield and loses effectiveness on comeback and in-breaking routes that require crisp top-of-route separation. In zone, he finds the soft spots naturally, and near the goal line on fade routes, Fields is a legitimate mismatch.

The most useful comparison may be Nico Collins, a similarly built receiver who needed time and the right situation to unlock his potential, with some Marquez Colston in his DNA as a big, physical possession receiver who makes a career out of doing the dirty work at every level of the field.
